SIALKOT: Former additional deputy commissioner revenue (ADCR) Iqbal Sanghera, who escaped from police custody while being transported to Lahore, has been arrested again.

The police sources revealed that a special unit of the Rawalpindi Police tracked Sanghera and detained him. Ex-ADCR, who is wanted in a Rawalpindi corruption case, is being shifted to Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail.

It is important to mention here that an additional deputy commissioner of revenue, accused in multiple corruption cases, escaped from police custody while being transported to Lahore, prompting Chakri police to register a case against four police officials.

The complaint filed by Inspector Muhammad Asghar of the Adiala Jail Judicial Guard stated that ADCR Muhammad Iqbal Sanghera was being escorted back to Lahore on November 13 after being presented before an anti-corruption court in Rawalpindi. The escape occurred during a stop at the Chakri interchange rest area along the motorway.

Inspector Asghar stated that on November 15, he contacted Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Zafar Iqbal to inquire about the missing prisoner when Sanghera had not arrived at Lahore Jail. ASI Zafar reportedly admitted that he and three other officers, Constable Yasir, Constable Ahmed Bilal, and Constable Muharram Shahzad had stopped at the rest area to use the restroom.

During that time, Sanghera’s brother, accompanied by six others, arrived in a Lexus SUV bearing registration number 077. The group allegedly helped Sanghera escape in the vehicle.

The complainant alleged that ASI Zafar was in contact with Sanghera’s brother and assisted in the escape. When questioned about the delay in reporting the incident, the ASI stated that they had initially attempted to locate the accused themselves before deciding not to report the incident out of shame.

Chakri police have registered a case against the four policemen, the escaped revenue official Muhammad Iqbal Sanghera, and his accomplices under Sections 223, 224, and 225 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), as well as Section 155-C of the Police Order 2002.

Section 223 deals with the offence of a public servant negligently allowing a person in custody to escape, while Section 224 addresses resisting or obstructing lawful apprehension, and Section 225 also pertains to preventing lawful arrest. Section 155-C of the Police Order 2002 specifically penalises willful misconduct by police officers, including any “wilful breach or neglect of any provision of law or of any rule or regulation or any order which he is bound to observe or obey.”
