Bahrain has imposed a temporary travel ban on its citizens visiting Iran and Iraq, according to reports today.
In a statement issued from the capital, Manama, Bahrain’s Ministry of Interior said the decision was taken to protect national security and ensure the safety of citizens.
According to the ministry, travel to Iran and Iraq has been temporarily suspended due to the tense security situation in the region.
It said that travelling to these countries could pose risks to citizens under the current circumstances.
The statement added that the government considers the safety of its citizens a top priority. And this is why the measure has been introduced.
The Ministry of Interior urged citizens to follow official instructions and avoid all non essential travel to Iran and Iraq during the ban.
Authorities said the situation is being monitored closely and the decision may be reviewed if conditions improve.
Bahrain tightens rules on citizenship
The King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, has ordered an immediate review of cases related to Bahraini citizenship, according to the reports on Wednesday.
The Bahraini government has decided to revoke the citizenship of people it considers a threat to national security.
According to the state run Bahrain News Agency, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa directed authorities to review the citizenship status of individuals who are seen as a risk to the country’s security.
The King said that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found guilty of treason or actions that harm Bahrain’s security and stability.
Reports said the King gave these instructions during a meeting with senior government officials.
Earlier, Bahrain had relaxed some visa regulations because of the regional security situation and the impact of tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran on Gulf countries.
According to reports, the conflict has led to the cancellation or suspension of several flights since February 28.
