The LPG mafia has allegedly become unchecked across Pakistan, with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) being sold at prices nearly Rs200 per kilogram above the official rate.
According to Irfan Khokhar, chairman of the LPG Distributors Association, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority has fixed the official LPG price at Rs309 per kilogram. However, he claimed that in some parts of the country, LPG is being sold for as much as Rs500 per kilogram.
Khokhar alleged that OGRA and other relevant government institutions have failed to ensure the sale of LPG at official rates. He said consumers are being forced to purchase LPG at inflated prices, resulting in billions of rupees being extracted from the public every day.
He urged the authorities to take immediate action to ensure the availability of LPG at government-approved rates and to launch a strict crackdown against those involved in hoarding, profiteering, and price manipulation.
Khokhar further stressed that strong enforcement measures are needed to protect consumers from excessive pricing and to restore stability to the LPG market.
