RAWALPINDI: A new e-challan system for traffic violations has become active in Rawalpindi with effect from today, the twin city of Islamabad.
Safe City cameras have started issuing automatic e-challans. Photos of the violation along with a code will be sent to the vehicle owner, and the fine must be paid within the given time.
The e-challan system is linked with the Safe City Command and Control Centre. Traffic violations will be detected through CCTV cameras.
ANPR cameras are currently operational at eight locations in the city. These include Bahria Paradise, Gulzar-e-Quaid, Faizabad, and the ISI turn near Faizabad.
Cameras have also been installed on 9th Avenue, at 26 Number, and at both the old and new motorway toll plazas.
Signal jumping, riding a motorcycle without a helmet, lane violations and using a mobile phone while driving will all result in instant e-challans.
Illegal or non-standard number plates will also be flagged automatically. As soon as a violation is recorded, a challan will be issued and sent to the home address.
Rawalpindi has more than 2,000 Safe City cameras installed at 359 locations, while 15 cameras monitor entry and exit points.
These cameras help monitor public places, manage traffic, assist traffic police and keep an eye on major roads.
Officials say the surveillance system is also helping with quick reporting of crimes and other incidents.
