Spider-Man $1 billion

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has opened with a huge $927 million opening weekend worldwide, and $314 million in North America, which makes it the second-largest worldwide and North American opening weekend of all time.

The movie grossed $355 million in the US and Canada and $572 million overseas, with China accounting for $121 million.

This is the fourth film with Tom Holland as Spider-Man, who is now facing a world that has forgotten he exists.

Zendaya reappears as MJ, and this time, the narrative is about Parker’s search for friendship and human connection, and his loneliness.

“The film’s emotional elements have touched every age group, and it’s a tale of friendship, human connection,” Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Tom Rothman said.

Brand New Day has the best domestic opening since the COVID-19 pandemic, and is also coming in below only 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which grossed $1.6 billion inflation-adjusted worldwide.

Critics and audiences have also lauded the film, giving it a 90% critics’ score and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Its emotional narrative has resonated strongly with the younger audience, particularly Generation Z, as it delves into the themes of isolation, resilience, and overcoming personal struggles.

The blockbuster opening has further helped put an already solid summer film slate on the map with some big releases, including Toy Story 5 and The Odyssey.

The success of these films helped to make one of the biggest domestic weekends in movie theatre history, and the Spider-Man franchise is now closing in on $1 billion in worldwide theatrical gross.
