Motorcyclists across Punjab to face fines if they ride without side view mirrors or functioning indicators. The City Traffic Police Lahore has launched a province-wide campaign aimed at improving road safety. The initiative targets motorcycles lacking mandatory safety equipment to avoid road accidents.
In an official statement, the traffic police announced that strict action will be taken against riders operating motorcycles without properly installed side mirrors and indicators, as the absence of side mirrors and indicators have been identified as a major contributing factor in many road accidents.
Further, Sindh High Court (SHC) heared a petition challenging a provincial law that exempts motorcycles from the mandatory installation of side mirrors in Sindh. The court issued notices to the Sindh government and the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic seeking their responses to the petition.
A bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar heard the case. The petitioner’s counsel during the proceedings argued that the provincial government had introduced legislation exempting motorcycles from side mirror requirements.
The lawyer told the court that riders wearing helmets cannot observe vehicles approaching from either side without mirrors. This increases the likelihood of traffic accidents. He further urged the court to direct the government to repeal the exemption and introduce fines for motorcyclists who operate motorcycles without side mirrors.
On the other hand, previously, Punjab police intensified their crackdown against traffic violators. As per reports, Punjab Police issued more than 4.8 million driving licenses this year as part of a province-wide campaign aimed at improving public services and strengthening enforcement of traffic laws.
