Xiaomi is preparing to expand its Redmi line-up in the second half of 2026, and the Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G could be one of its most interesting launches.
The Redmi 17 5G has already launched in China, while an India launch is expected in September. Reports suggest Xiaomi could introduce the phone in India around September 5, although the company has yet to confirm the date.
What makes the Redmi 17 5G stand out is not a high-end camera or a flagship processor. Xiaomi appears to be taking a different route by focusing on battery life, a large display and practical features.
The phone packs a huge 7,500mAh battery, which is considerably larger than what is common in this price segment. It supports 45W turbo charging and 22.5W wired reverse charging, allowing users to charge other compatible devices from the phone.
The battery is housed inside a body measuring 8.8mm thick and weighing 232 grams. That makes the Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G a sizeable phone, but the extra weight comes with a clear benefit for users who want longer battery life.

Photography is handled by a 50MP main rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture, while an 8MP camera sits on the front. Redmi 17’s rear camera supports features such as Night Mode, HDR, Portrait and time-lapse recording, with video recording available at up to 1080p at 30 frames per second.
The phone also keeps several features that are becoming less common on budget smartphones. It has a 3.5mm headphone jack, FM radio, NFC, Bluetooth 5.1 and a hybrid SIM and microSD slot.
Xiaomi has given the Redmi 17 5G an IP64 rating for splash and dust resistance. A side-mounted fingerprint sensor and AI face unlock provide biometric security.
The phone will be available in Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange colour options. It runs Xiaomi HyperOS 3, although some software features may vary by region.
The Xiaomi Redmi 17 5G is therefore shaping up as a phone built around endurance rather than raw performance. Its 7,500mAh battery, 6.9-inch 120Hz display, expandable storage and 5G connectivity could make it an attractive option for buyers who want a phone that can last through a long day without constantly reaching for a charger.
The bigger question is its price. Xiaomi will need to keep the Redmi 17 5G competitively priced when it reaches new markets. If it does, the phone could give buyers another reason to prioritise battery life over headline-grabbing specifications.
