Inter Miami captain and football icon Lionel Messi has posted an emotional statement about the loss of his father and long-time representative, Jorge Messi, who died at 68.

For the first time since his father’s death, Messi spoke about the huge impact Jorge had on his life and career, calling him ‘father, friend and representative.’

Jorge’s pivotal role in Messi’s career trajectory cannot be denied, from taking him to football as a child in the city of Rosario to representing him in his time at Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami.

Messi also admitted that he was having a difficult time as he was still playing for Argentina while his dad was sick.

He said he took the opportunity to make one last international appearance in 2026 World Cup due to the motivation from his father.

Messi also reflected on his uncertain football future; he said that all he has ever done is play football and now he has serious doubts about whether he will keep playing in the future.

The Argentine also gave his parents credit for the sacrifices they made while he was growing up, and stated that the ethics that were taught to him helped him be the player and person he is today.

He would like to pass down those same traits to his own children.

After the defeat, Inter Miami gave Messi a leave of absence, as he wanted to spend time with his family.

The last time he played for the team, was against Atlético de San Luis in the Leagues Cup, when he went on to score twice and give an assist.

He has a contract with Inter Miami, but there’s no timeline for his return.
