Residents of Akhtar Colony in PS-105 constituency of Karachi East-IX say unreliable water supply, poor sanitation, damaged roads and limited access to public healthcare are making everyday life increasingly difficult.
Speaking to Pakistan Connect, residents described a neighbourhood where access to basic services remains a serious concern.
One resident said households had depended on water tankers for years because of problems with the piped supply.
“Since 2012, tankers have been running for water in the lines,” the resident said, adding that a tanker can cost around Rs1,000 and may take two to three days to arrive.
Residents also complained about sewage and stagnant water in parts of the colony. They said the sanitation situation was particularly troubling around a mosque, where garbage containers and open gutters are visible.
The poor condition of roads was another major concern raised by residents. They said the main road and surrounding streets lacked adequate infrastructure and maintenance.
Gas shortages are also affecting daily routines, according to residents. One resident said families often try to prepare breakfast early because gas supply can stop around 09:00.
The shortage of essential services is placing an additional financial burden on poorer households, residents said.
“We have to buy water,” one resident said, describing the situation as especially difficult for families who cannot easily afford private water supplies.
Residents also raised concerns about healthcare, saying there was no government hospital nearby where people with limited financial means could seek treatment.
The complaints reflect wider concerns often raised by residents of Karachi’s lower-income neighbourhoods, where access to reliable water, sanitation, roads, healthcare and other basic services remains a major issue.
PS-105 of Karachi East-IX is a long-term constituency of the current provincial minister Saeed Ghani of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
The correspondent of Pakistan Connect visited the PS-105 constituency to hear directly from residents about the problems they face in their daily lives and to document the condition of public infrastructure in the area.
