YouTube has announced a big change in video view counts that will be implemented worldwide on August 24, 2026.
In the new system, the number of views will be incremented from the first frame of a video as soon as it begins to play.
At present, YouTube employs various strategies to measure views for different types of videos.
The new change is designed to remove these disparities and add a common standard to count views on the platform.
Previously, YouTube adjusted the counting of public views to accurately reflect the behaviour of viewers of short-form content on the platform, the company said.
This will now be expanded to all other video formats as well.

The company has received requests from creators for increased transparency about views, especially as it pertains to different view measurement systems and how they affect the understanding of a video’s actual viewings and exposure.
The new system will give creators a better understanding of what is happening with their content.
Videos could start being counted as views sooner than before due to the change, as the number of views will be added as soon as they are played.
YouTube explained, however, that the change will not impact monetisation. No new changes will also be made to the eligibility criteria for the YouTube Partner Program.
The new system will provide a more uniform perspective of the overall reach of a creator, the company said.
This may also assist them in providing improved audience and performance metrics to brands, sponsors and advertising partners.
