An aircraft pilot died Wednesday evening after a small plane collided with a state police helicopter. The crash happened at Carlisle Regional Airport in Cumberland, Pennsylvania. The helicopter belonged to the Pennsylvania State Police. It was carrying out routine training exercises at the time of the collision. The small aircraft, a Cessna 150, had just taken off. It turned right and struck the helicopter from behind.

What happened at the airport

Officials said the helicopter was flying only a few meters above the ground. The impact left the two pilots with almost no warning. Lieutenant Colonel George Bivens, acting commissioner of the State Police, described the sequence of events. He said the crew had no time to see the approaching plane.

“The helicopter was only a few meters above the ground,” Bivens said. He added that the pilots could not react before the collision. The aircraft pilot flying the Cessna 150 died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the pilot’s name.

Officers trapped inside the helicopter

Two police officers were inside the helicopter when the crash occurred. Both became trapped in the wreckage after the impact. One officer managed to break a window from inside. He then helped his fellow officer escape the damaged helicopter. Their quick actions likely prevented further injuries. The condition of both officers has not been confirmed.

Emergency response

Emergency crews reached the scene quickly after the collision. Responders worked to secure the area and assist those involved. The airport remained active with training operations before the crash. Officials have not said whether flights were suspended afterward. Mid-air collisions near airports are rare but serious. This crash shows how quickly conditions can change during takeoff and low-altitude flight.

Training flights and small aircraft often share the same airspace. This means clear communication and awareness remain critical for every aircraft pilot. Investigators are expected to examine the cause of the collision. Federal aviation authorities typically review crashes involving aircraft and helicopters. State Police officials said more details will follow as the investigation continues. No timeline for the final report has been shared. The crash claimed one life and left two officers shaken but alive.
