Pakistan and Google signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Friday (today) to advance the country’s digital transformation. The MoU allows students to have free access to the company’s advanced artificial intelligence tools, including Google AI Plus and Gemini.

The agreement was formalised during a reception hosted by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the PM House in honour of the visiting Google delegation, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Key areas covered in MoU

  • Digital skills training will be expanded to prepare more Pakistanis for jobs in the technology sector
  • Google aims to provide 150,000 Google Career Certificates in Pakistan during 2026
  • An AI Centre of Excellence will be established in Islamabad to train Pakistani youth and professionals according to global market requirements
  • Cooperation will focus on increasing Pakistan’s IT exports and encouraging technological innovation
  • Pakistan’s mobile application and gaming industries to improve their competitiveness in international markets
  • Digital payments and e-commerce will be expanded to strengthen Pakistan’s digital economy
  • Artificial intelligence will be used to improve public services and government operations
  • AI-based data analytics will support the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) in its digitisation efforts
  • AI technology will be introduced in agriculture for crop monitoring and sustainable farming practices
  • Digital platforms will help small enterprises (SMEs) reach customers in international markets
  • A joint task force comprising the government, Google and other stakeholders will develop a roadmap for increasing Pakistan’s IT exports

Moreover, the agreement follows Google’s announcement on Thursday of a $500,000 investment to support the “Digital Pasban” initiative. This will provide 200,000 Pakistani households with Urdu language digital safety resources, instructional videos and parental workshops.

The move comes following the opening of its Karachi office earlier this week.
