Parents in Sindh have raised numerous complaints against private schools over arbitrary fee hikes and other practices that are increasing the financial burden on families.
The complaints include annual increases in school fees, compulsory changes to uniforms, and the sale of expensive textbooks and educational materials through designated vendors.
The issue was raised during a hearing chaired by Sindh Ombudsman Muhammad Sohail Rajput, which was attended by senior education officials, including the special secretary for education, director general of private schools and an additional director.
Parents told the hearing that some private schools were increasing fees every year in violation of regulations, making education increasingly expensive for families.
They also complained that students were required to purchase new uniforms every two years, while textbooks and other educational materials had to be purchased from specific vendors at inflated prices.
Some parents further alleged that younger siblings were not allowed to use textbooks purchased by their older brothers or sisters in the previous academic year, forcing families to buy new sets of books.
Taking notice of the complaints, Sindh Ombudsman Muhammad Rajput directed the director general of private schools to submit a detailed report by Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
The ombudsman said action would be taken against private schools found violating the law, providing relief to parents facing unjustified fee hikes and other additional charges.
Punjab may review school calendar
Earlier, it had been reported that the Punjab government may review the school academic calendar after private schools raised concerns about the long summer holidays in the province.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat said in an interview with a private TV channel that long holidays can affect students’ studies. He also agreed with the concerns raised by private schools.
The minister said the government is considering a plan to open schools on alternate Saturdays after the summer break.
He added that the new academic calendar will be prepared after discussions with private schools.
Rana Sikandar Hayat also said the government will prepare an alternative plan if schools have to close unexpectedly due to any situation.
He said the Friday holiday also affects the number of study days. According to the minister, schools should operate for 180 days a year. However, they currently remain open for around 140 days.
