Pakistan Railways has announced plans to restore two passenger train services in September and October as part of efforts to improve connectivity/
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said the government is focused on improving connectivity while preparing for major upgrades to the railway network.
The Mohenjo Daro Passenger Train will resume operations on September 15, while a passenger service between Sialkot and Rawalpindi will begin on October 15.
The government has recently stepped up efforts to revive passenger services and upgrade railway infrastructure. Pakistan Railways reported record revenue of Rs115.2 billion ($414 million) in FY2025–26, an increase of 24.2 per cent year-on-year, although the organisation continues to operate at a loss.
Passenger demand remains strong, with Pakistan Railways carrying 24.16 million passengers during July–March of FY2025–26.
However, the railway system continues to face significant challenges, including ageing infrastructure, dilapidated tracks and maintenance issues. Pakistan Railways has also faced scrutiny over a series of operational mishaps and safety concerns.
Authorities have been working to improve railway stations, restore passenger services and upgrade infrastructure as part of broader efforts to modernise the country’s rail network.
