Pakistan to witness last Supermoon of 2025

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is all set to witness the last supermoon, also known as Cold Moon of the ongoing year, 2025.

As per details, the announcement was made by Pakistan Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), stating that the supermoon will be visible across Pakistan during the nights of 4th and 5th December.

How Supermoon occurs

Supermoons are no longer a complex phenomenon for general people. With the easy access to the internet, people know what it is and how it occurs, but the very few who still have no idea about a supermoon, here is a little intro about how it occurs.

When a full Moon occurs at the closest point to Earth during its orbit, it appears larger and brighter, becoming what is commonly known as a ‘supermoon’.

A supermoon is widely recorded as being much larger and far brighter than the Moon on any other night – and there’s an easy explanation for it.

December Supermoon

This supermoon will be the third consecutive supermoon of 2025 and the last one, too. It will reach peak illumination (~99.8%) at 04:15 PST on 5 December, while in Pakistan, the 99.2% illuminated Moon will rise at 16:58 PST on the evening of 4 December.

The space enthusiasts across Pakistan will see the supermoon throughout the night of 4–5 December. Although slightly less “super” than the November supermoon, this event remains notable. During the earlier supermoon on November 5, the Earth–Moon distance was 356,978 km.

Whereas, the distance will be 357,218 km on the night of December 4–5, making December’s full Moon appear approximately 7.9% larger and 15% brighter than an average full Moon.

How to watch a Supermoon?

The supermoon will be visible to everyone without any telescope or special gear. For the best view, head to an open area away from city lights and look toward the east after sunset.

While the change in the moon’s size may seem slight to the naked eye, clear skies will make its glow more striking.
