Fatima Sana-led Pakistan are on the verge of opening their ACC Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026 campaign with a victory after restricting Thailand to 34 for three in 11 overs in Dubai on Tuesday.
Pakistan posted 119 for nine after being asked to bat first at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, leaving Thailand with a daunting target of 120.
At the halfway stage of Thailand’s chase, the required run rate has climbed to 9.56, with Thailand needing 86 runs from 54 balls. Pakistan’s win probability stands at 99.4 percent, making Fatima Sana’s side overwhelming favourites to claim the two points.
Naruemol Chaiwai is unbeaten on 16 from 25 balls, while Aphisara Suwanchonrathi is yet to score after facing five deliveries.
For Pakistan, Nashra Sandhu has conceded just two runs in her two overs and has taken one wicket, while Tuba Hassan has also kept the scoring under control.
The strong position Pakistan find themselves in reflects the confidence Fatima Sana expressed before the match.
“It is an honour to represent Pakistan, and as captain, it is definitely a great honour,” Fatima Sana said in a recent interview. “InshaAllah, the effort will be to give my best and for the team to perform at its best so that we can create winning moments and win the trophy.”
Fatima Sana also played down the importance of the opposition in the T20 format, saying the team that performs better on the day has the advantage.
“I personally believe that in the T20 format, whoever performs better on the day has the advantage. So, I don’t think the opponent matters that much,” she said.
The Pakistan captain added that the team’s priority would be to play its best cricket and put itself in winning positions rather than becoming overly concerned about the opposition.
Pakistan entered the tournament looking to go beyond the semi-final stage, having reached the last four in the 2022 and 2024 editions. The team’s best finish in the competition came in 2012 and 2016, when Pakistan ended as runners-up.
The current match is particularly important for Fatima Sana and her side as it marks Pakistan’s first game of the 2026 tournament. Pakistan will face India on September 5 before taking on Hong Kong, China on September 7.
Despite Thailand’s recent form and the teams’ evenly matched T20I head-to-head record, the live situation has put Pakistan firmly in control. With Thailand needing almost 10 runs an over and only seven wickets remaining, Pakistan are the clear favourites to win, with Fatima Sana’s side currently holding a 99.4 percent win probability.
Fatima Sana had earlier said Pakistan would approach the tournament one game at a time, with the ultimate aim of winning every match and producing positive results.
With the Asia Cup campaign now underway, the Pakistan captain will be hoping her team can turn its dominant position against Thailand into a winning start.
