The Punjab government has given relief to citizens on fees for late birth and death registration, according to reports on Wednesday.
The government has amended the Birth and Death Rules 2025. The period for free registration has been extended by three years.
According to reports, a formal gazette notification has been issued regarding the fee waiver and extension.
Secretary Local Government Zaid Bin Maqsood has directed the Director General Local Government to ensure immediate implementation of the decision.
Punjab made birth and death registration free
Previously, the Punjab government had announced free birth and death registration for up to seven years.
The Punjab government had waived all fees for computerised birth and death registration certificates during this period.
The decision was taken under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. It was announced during a meeting chaired by Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Engr Aamir Khattak.
The commissioner directed Director Local Government Syed Sabtain Kazmi to make sure that the policy was implemented across all union councils and municipal committees in the division.
He said that providing easy access to important documents was a key priority of the Punjab government. He also said the move would help protect children’s rights.
Under the notification issued on April 21, 2025, death and birth registration within seven years was made completely free.
What will happen in case of delayed registrations?
However, registration after seven years carried fees ranging from Rs200 to Rs1,000. Overseas Pakistanis were charged Rs1,000 while foreign nationals had to pay Rs2,000 for birth registration.
The government also made the process easier by removing the need for court decrees in delayed registration cases.
Officials from the local administration and municipal departments attended the meeting.
Director Local Government Syed Sabtain Kazmi also said awareness banners had been placed at government offices to inform citizens about the new rules.
