Web desk: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the summary for appointing Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, and forwarded it to the Presidency, according to the PM House Spokesperson.
Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will serve as both the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of Defence Forces.
The appointment is for a period of five years. He will be the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also approved a two-year extension in the tenure of the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu.
This extension will take effect after he completes his current five-year term in March 2026.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced on December 4, 2025, that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has approved the summary of the appointment of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as the country’s first Chief of Defence Forces.
The appointment summary has been sent to the President of Pakistan for formal approval.
Field Marshal Asim Munir’s tenure as Chief of Defence Forces will be for five years, making him the first officer to hold this newly created post.
In a related development, the Prime Minister has also approved a two-year extension in the service of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Babar Sidhu, the Chief of Air Staff.
This extension will come into effect after the completion of his current five-year term in March 2026.
