In a significant reshuffle within the federal capital’s police and cybercrime investigation framework, Sohail Chaudhry has been appointed as the new Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police, while incumbent IG Ali Nasir Rizvi has been transferred and appointed Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA).
Sohail Chaudhry is a BS-20 officer of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP). He has previously served in several key positions in Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan and has also held important responsibilities in the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab.
His previous assignments include serving as Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore, City Police Officer (CPO) Faisalabad, DIG Operations Lahore, DIG CTD Punjab and Regional Police Officer (RPO) Multan.
Chaudhry assumed charge as DIG Operations Lahore following the 2021 Minar-e-Pakistan harassment incident, which brought his professional profile into the national spotlight. He later served as DIG CTD Punjab before being transferred out of the province and posted as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD).
Meanwhile, Ali Nasir Rizvi, who was serving as IG Islamabad Police, will now take charge as Director General of the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency.
Sohail Chaudhry’s appointment as head of Islamabad Police comes at a time when efforts are underway to modernise the capital’s police force. These initiatives include an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled command-and-control system aimed at strengthening real-time surveillance and improving the force’s response capabilities.
