Punjab buses impounded for emitting smoke

LAHORE: The Environment Department in Lahore has shut down two Punjab University buses for emitting smoke as per the court’s directives.

According to the department’s spokesperson, the action was taken on the orders of the Lahore High Court. The spokesperson said both buses were producing excessive smoke and the staff did not have an environmental fitness certificate.

Legal proceedings have been initiated against the buses under the Environmental Act, the spokesperson added.

he Punjab government, acting on court orders, has launched a tough anti-smog drive. Authorities have issued thousands of fines of over Rs2,000, impounded more than 7,700 smoke-emitting vehicles, and handed out over 87,000 tickets.

Fitness certificates are being suspended and route permits for heavy transport, including school and hospital vehicles, are being cancelled.

The campaign targets old and unfit vehicles under the Environmental Protection Act as the province tries to curb dangerous air pollution.
