The Punjab government has enforced Section 144 throughout the province from September 23 to October 5 in view of the law and order issues, possible protests and terror attacks.
The notice was released by the Punjab Home Department under the provisions of Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, based on the intelligence reports and law enforcement institutions, regarding the emergency.
In the notification, it was mentioned that proscribed and terrorist groups were preparing attacks and could target public gatherings, rallies and demonstrations. The restrictions were imposed to ensure the safety and security of citizens and to avoid any security issues, authorities said.
The order has banned gatherings of five or more individuals at public areas, highways and open spaces. The display of weapons and attempts to encourage people to participate in illegal gatherings have also been banned.
The restrictions will continue to be in effect throughout the Punjab until October 5, it is not expected that they will be withdrawn or extended by the authorities.
However, the Section 144 restrictions do not apply to wedding ceremonies, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship.
Punjab Home Department has also stated that courts and government institutions would not be affected by the restrictions. Common activities that are approved by the administration with a formal request will also be permitted.
The ban will also not cover law enforcement and security officials who are acting within their official capacity.
The provincial government has appealed to people to follow the restrictions and work with the law enforcement and security agencies during the period.
The decision follows the suspicious nature of the security situation in the province of Punjab and a fear that big events might fall under the militant wing of the opposition.
Citizenry has been warned not to participate in banned gatherings and to adhere to guidelines provided by authorities to ensure safety of the public and to avoid any untoward event during the enforcement period.
