The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has increased the monthly stipend for postgraduate doctors by Rs29,390, providing financial relief to doctors undergoing specialist medical training.
The increase was approved by Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab, and an official notification has been issued to implement the revised stipend.
Postgraduate doctors working under KMC will now receive a monthly stipend of Rs104,390. Their previous monthly stipend was Rs75,000.
The decision covers postgraduate trainees working in medical institutions administered by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation.
FCPS and MCPS trainees
The revised stipend structure also covers doctors undergoing FCPS and MCPS training. These postgraduate programmes allow doctors to receive specialist training in different areas of medicine.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) oversees FCPS and MCPS postgraduate medical training and accreditation.
Doctors and medical professionals continue to face higher living and training costs. Postgraduate doctors often work long hours in hospitals while completing the clinical requirements of their specialist programmes.
KMC runs major healthcare facilities in Karachi, including Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and other medical institutions where postgraduate doctors receive clinical training. The revised stipend will provide additional financial support to doctors working and training at these facilities.
However, house officers have not been included in the latest stipend increase.
House officers are newly graduated doctors completing supervised clinical training in hospitals. Their house job is an important stage before they move towards independent medical practice or postgraduate specialist training.
KMC lifts ban on government vehicles and petrol
Previously, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) decided to lift restrictions on the use of government vehicles and petrol.
The decision ends the fuel saving measures introduced earlier this year. These restrictions were imposed after fuel costs increased amid the Iran and US conflict.
KMC Financial Advisor Gulzar Ali issued an official notification confirming the withdrawal of the restrictions.
According to the notification, KMC has reversed its earlier decision to keep 60 per cent of its government vehicles off the road. Government vehicles that were grounded under the previous policy will be allowed to operate again.
