Netflix is moving forward with a sequel to its record breaking animated musical K-Pop Demon Hunters, with the company planning to expand the story of Rumi, Mira and Zoey.

The sequel has officially been confirmed, with directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans returning. The project will also be the first under Netflix’s multi-year writing and directing partnership with the filmmakers.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos previously described the original film as a major success. He said the strong response to both the movie and its music gave the company opportunities to develop the franchise further.

The first KPop Demon Hunters follows K-pop stars Rumi, Mira and Zoey, who perform together as HUNTR/X.

KPop Demon Hunters 2 expected to be bigger

Directors Kang and Appelhans have already shared some details about their plans for the sequel.

Kang said the team has a big idea for the next movie but does not want to reveal spoilers. Appelhans said the filmmakers want the sequel to surprise audiences rather than repeating what worked in the first film.

He also said the goal is to make the next movie as large and spectacular as possible while keeping the story at its centre.

Netflix has not yet announced a firm release date for K-Pop Demon Hunters 2.

Reportedly, the sequel is not expected before 2029, although the final release schedule remains unconfirmed.

Netflix sees major potential in the franchise

The original movie became Netflix’s most popular film and developed a huge international following after its June 2025 debut. Netflix says it has now recorded more than 500 million views.

Its music also became a major success. HUNTR/X became the first K-pop girl group to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, while the song Golden won a Grammy Award.

Reportedly, Netflix considered several possibilities, including additional sequels, a stage musical and a series. A live-action version was also discussed in reports, although Netflix said at the time that a live action remake was not under discussion.
