Police have arrested four people suspected of involvement in a network linked to the theft of underground cables in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The police officials said stolen cables and cutting tools were recovered during the arrests. Cases have been registered against the suspects, and further investigations are under way.
One suspect was arrested within the jurisdiction of the Westridge police station, while three others were detained in the area covered by the Civil Lines police station, according to the report.
Sources claim that more than 50 people, including scrap dealers and labourers, may be linked to the alleged network.
The suspects are accused of stealing underground cables from different areas and selling them on to buyers. Police said the four arrested men told investigators that the stolen cables were transported to Gujranwala for sale.
The claims have not been independently verified, and it remains unclear how many thefts may be linked to the suspected network.
The investigation has also raised questions about possible links between the network and five police officers in Islamabad and Rawalpindi, according to sources.
However, no further details have been provided about the officers’ alleged involvement, and it is not clear whether any action has been taken against them.
If the alleged links are substantiated, investigators may need to examine whether any officials helped facilitate the thefts or the sale of stolen materials.
Police are continuing efforts to identify other suspected members of the network and establish how the stolen cables were collected, transported and sold.
Authorities have not disclosed the total value of the recovered cables or the number of theft incidents under investigation.
