Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) social media activist Sanam Javed has reportedly filed a khula petition against her husband, Atiq Riaz, in a Lahore family court.
According to reports, the court has issued a notice to Atiq Riaz, directing him to submit his response by November 25. The next hearing in the case has also been scheduled for the same date.
Sanam Javed is currently being held at Kot Lakhpat Jail in connection with cases related to the May 9 incidents. Her lawyer, Barrister Khadija Siddiqui, confirmed the development in a statement shared on social media.
Meanwhile, Sanam Javed’s legal team has urged media organisations and social media users to respect her privacy and refrain from speculation about the matter. The reasons behind the khula petition have not been publicly disclosed. Sanam Javed’s lawyer, Khadija Siddiqui, confirmed the development on her official X account. Explaining the legal position and situation, she wrote that a khula petition had been filed in court on behalf of Sanam Javed Khan.
Barrister Khadija Siddiqui further said that this was Sanam Javed’s entirely private and personal family matter. She strongly urged all electronic and digital media outlets, journalists and social media commentators to completely avoid unnecessary speculation, personal comments and unverified reports so that her privacy would not be affected.
It may be recalled that Sanam Javed Khan has faced arrests, jail hardships and a prolonged legal battle in several cases registered after the May 9 incidents. As a result, she has remained the focus of national media and political circles, while this new development in her personal life following sustained political and legal pressure has caused concern among her well-wishers and family members.
