Imported giraffe dies at Lahore safari zoo

Web desk: An imported giraffe died at the Lahore safari zoo a few days ago. This has happened reportedly due to climate stress and stomach complications.

The case of the giraffes recently imported for the Lahore Safari Zoo has taken a concerning turn after one of the animals died.

Twelve giraffes had been imported from South Africa a few months back. All of which were initially kept in quarantine at the Safari Zoo. This period of quarantine has now concluded.

Safari Park sources said that two of the giraffes had been weak and underweight since their arrival.

Despite being provided the same diet and environment as the others, both animals showed no significant growth and exhibited symptoms of stomach issues.

The Punjab government had allocated Rs 135 million for the project.

Of the 12 giraffes, nine were shifted to the Safari Park while three were moved to the Lahore Zoo.

Efforts to obtain an official statement from the Wildlife Department regarding the situation are still underway.

Giraffes arrive in Lahore safari park

Previously, in November 2025, it had been reported that Lahore safari park welcomed giraffes for the first time. It marked a new addition to the city’s wildlife attractions.

This arrival followed the completion of a quarantine period for twelve giraffes imported from South Africa, and the Punjab Wildlife Department supervised it.

According to officials, the giraffes had been brought to Lahore.

They were kept under observation at the Safari Park to assess their health and adaptation to local conditions.

Of the twelve animals, nine were slated for permanent relocation to the Lahore Safari Park, while three were intended for the historic Lahore Zoo.

However, due to the severe smog and poor air quality, even then, in Lahore at the time. The animals remained temporarily confined to their quarantine enclosure.

A team of veterinary experts had been monitoring their diet and behaviour. This was to ensure a smooth transition into their new environment.
