Rain, heavy snowfall forecast for Punjab

LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has forecasted rain across most districts of Punjab, with heavy snowfall expected in the province’s hilly areas on December 20 and 21.

According to PDMA spokesperson, snowfall is likely in the mountainous regions of Punjab during the two-day period. Rain accompanied by possible snowfall is predicted in Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, and the Potohar region.

Other districts expected to receive rainfall include Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sargodha, Khushab, Faisalabad, and Hafizabad.

Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Sialkot, and Jhang are also likely to see showers, while Toba Tek Singh may experience rain specifically on December 20 and 21, according to PDMA.

The Director General of PDMA stated that the rains are expected to reduce fog and smog levels across the province. He urged citizens to continue wearing masks to protect against smog.

Additionally, the DG advised tourists visiting Murree to exercise caution and adopt necessary safety measures during the weather spell.

KP announces winter vacations

The Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa earlier announced the winter vacations of all learning institutions.

The notification includes the details about the holidays of both Government and private schools as well as colleges. The state has developed two distinct schedules depending on the climate regions.

In the summer zones, the institutions will be closed between 1 January and 15 January. However, a much longer break will be witnessed in the winter season.

These schools will remain closed between 22 December 2025 and 28 February 2026. This will ensure that students and the staff are not exposed to the extreme seasonal cold.

Provincial Schedules of Vacations

Other provinces have also announced their winter vacation dates. Sindh schools will continue shutting down until 22 December-31 December.

Besides, Punjab has fixed its winter holiday between 22 December and 10 January. Board exams will be done as scheduled despite these holidays.

As a result, safety was of primary concern to the provincial education secretary in this most recent announcement. In summer zones, students will resume classes in the middle of January.

On the other hand, academic activities will start at the beginning of March in colder regions.

All in all, such precautions make sure that everyone remains safe even in the most severe winter weeks.
