Web desk: The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has clarified the procedure for citizens who want to update their marital status after divorce and remove an ex-spouse’s name from their CNIC and NADRA records.
How to remove ex-spouse’s name
According to NADRA, individuals can change their status from “Married” to “Divorced” once all legal requirements are fulfilled and verified.
To begin the process, citizens must obtain an official divorce or khula decree from a family court or the arbitration council.
After this, they are required to visit the Union Council where the marriage was originally registered.
At the Union Council, applicants must apply for a computerised divorce certificate.
The application must include details of both parties, the divorce date, case reference numbers, and copies of CNICs. Additionally, the witness information is also required for the process.
Once it has been issued, the divorce certificate can be collected from the Union Council office.
NADRA has issued this clarification after a social media user complained that, despite having a divorce certificate, the former spouse was still listed as “wife” in his NADRA records.
In response, NADRA explained that both former spouses must separately update their marital status by submitting. This is to be done by submitting the computerised divorce certificate to the National Database and Registration Authority.
NADRA has also stressed that marital status changes in its system are only made after proper verification of official documents. This helps to ensure legal accuracy in national records.
NADRA: CNIC address update
Previously, the National Database and Registration Authority issued new guidelines for citizens seeking to update the residential address on their National Identity Card (CNIC).
According to a NADRA spokesperson, the process for changing an address has been simplified to help people keep their records accurate and up to date.
The spokesperson stated that applicants must provide valid proof of residence to complete the update.
