WASHINGTON: On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, the White House said that President Donald Trump is discussing options for acquiring Greenland, among which is the potential use of the US military. Trump is ambitious about controlling the strategic island despite European objections.
The White House said in a statement that acquiring Greenland is seen as a US national security priority necessary to deal with the US’s adversaries in the Arctic region.
The White House further added that the President and his team are reviewing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal. In that range of options, the US military is also always an option.
Greenland has repeatedly made it clear that it does not want to be a part of the United States. Canadian and European Power leaders have supported the Arctic territory on Tuesday. They emphasised that Greenland belonged to its people.
If US military seizes Greenland from a longtime ally, Denmark, it would send shockwaves through the NATO alliance. The incident will deepen the divide between Trump and European leaders.
Trump has not been deterred by opposition from wanting to make Greenland a US hub in an area where China and Russia’s interests are growing. The interest was initially voiced by Trump in 2019 during his first term in office. The interest rekindled in recent days after the US arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Trump has become emboldened by Maduro’s capture last week. Trump is now voicing the belief that American dominance cannot be questioned in the Western Hemisphere. He is also putting pressure on both Colombia and Cuba.
Venezuelan President’s arrest is one of the reasons why he has started talking about Greenland again after putting it at backburner for months.
A senior US official said that they cannot reveal internal discussions, but Trump and his advisers are discussing a range of options to acquire Greenland.
