KP govt approves construction of two new motorways

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to construct two new motorways in the province, with Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi has given approval for the construction of major road infrastructure projects.

According to official details, the chief minister has directed authorities to commence construction work on Swat Motorway Phase II at the earliest, declaring it a flagship project of the provincial government.

He emphasized that all required resources would be provided on a priority basis to ensure the project’s completion within the stipulated timeframe. The chief minister also instructed officials to immediately resolve any technical issues related to the project.

Chairing an important meeting on flagship road sector projects, the chief minister announced that the foundation stone of the Peshawar-Dera Ismail Khan (DI Khan) Motorway would be laid soon. He directed the relevant departments to complete all necessary preparations without delay.

The meeting reviewed progress on Swat Motorway Phase II, the Peshawar–DI Khan Motorway, and the proposed Dir Motorway. In principle, it was decided that the Dir Motorway would be constructed entirely using provincial resources. Authorities were instructed to complete all legal and administrative requirements promptly to enable the start of construction work.

Addressing the meeting, Chief Minister Afridi said that both the Swat Motorway Phase II and the Peshawar–DI Khan Motorway would be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, while the provincial government would fully finance the Dir Motorway project.

Officials briefed the meeting that Swat Motorway Phase II will span 80 kilometers, extending from Chakdara Interchange to Fatehpur. The project includes the construction of nine interchanges and seven bridges at various points along the Swat River. Meanwhile, the Peshawar–DI Khan Motorway will be 365 kilometers long and will feature 19 interchanges and two tunnels.

The chief minister reiterated that the provincial government is giving special attention to the development and prosperity of people living in remote areas, adding that effective and transparent utilization of available resources is being ensured.

The meeting was attended by Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shahab Ali Shah, Additional Chief Secretary Planning and Development Ikramullah, Secretary Finance, Secretary Communication and Works (C&W), and other relevant officials.
