The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has warned mobile users about fake calls and UAN numbers.
The authority said that the scammers are impersonating the PTA, FIA, and banks to steal personal information.
In an awareness video, the PTA reminded consumers that no government organisation will ever ask for your OTP, PIN, identity card number, or biometrics.
Citizens were urged to stay alert and verify information only through official government channels.
The PTA also stressed responsible use of SIM cards.
Users must only use SIMs issued in their own name. Using SIMs registered under someone else’s ID is a violation of the law.
Registered consumers are fully responsible for all calls, messages, and data used on their SIMs.
PTA urged to “Beware of Spoofed Calls & Fake UAN Numbers!”
According to PTA, scammers are impersonating PTA, FIA, banks, JazzCash & Easypaisa to steal your personal and financial information.
The video is captioned, “Remember: No official organisation will ever ask for your OTP, PIN, CNIC, or biometrics on a call or message.”
Further adding, “Stay alert. Verify only through official channels.”
New MVNO policy approved
In a separate development, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has approved a new Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) Policy Framework.
The move is expected to allow more mobile service providers to enter the country without having to build their own networks.
Under the framework, companies can offer mobile services using existing networks of licensed operators but sell them under their own brand names.
The policy aims to increase competition, give consumers more choices.
Additionally, to allow customised mobile packages.
The Federal Cabinet approved the policy, and the PTA formally issued it.
An MVNO is defined as a mobile service provider that does not own towers, spectrum, or core network infrastructure.
Instead, it operates through agreements with licensed Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
