NASA has conducted the first-ever medical evacuation of astronauts from the International Space Station, bringing a four-member crew back to Earth after a health emergency in orbit. The Crew-11 capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California, at around 3:41am ET on Friday, completing a roughly 10-hour return journey after departing the ISS a day earlier.
NASA ordered the early return after flight surgeons concluded that the medical issue could not be adequately treated in microgravity. The crew includedNASA astronauts Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Platonov.
The spacecraft fired its engines to begin deorbit at 2:50 am, then endured a fiery re-entry through Earth’s atmosphere before deploying four parachutes for a controlled splashdown. A recovery ship with medical teams quickly retrieved the capsule, carried out initial health checks, and transported the astronauts by helicopter and jet to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston for further evaluation.
NASA has not identified the affected crew member or revealed details of the condition, citing medical privacy.
