New oil and gas reserves discovered in Pakistan

Oil and gas reserves

Pakistan has achieved another landmark in its energy sector with the discovery of oil and gas at the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well located in the Nashpa Block of Kohat district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The detection was announced by Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) in a announcement submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

OGDCL, which works the Nashpa block, made the discovery in partnership with Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL).

The newly discovered reserves were found in the Samana Suk and Shinawari formations, where successful testing confirmed commercially viable production.

According to OGDCL, the well produced a significant volume of oil and gas during testing, highlighting the strong hydrocarbon potential of the area.

The Baragzai X-01 well was drilled to explore multiple formations, several of which have already yielded positive results in earlier phases.

The company stated that this new find will play an important role in reducing Pakistan’s reliance on imported energy by increasing domestic production. It is also expected to strengthen the country’s overall energy security and contribute positively to national hydrocarbon reserves.

Pakistan introduces track-and-trace system to reform petroleum sector

In separate development the government has implemented comprehensive reforms to improve efficiency and transparency in the petroleum sector, while a track-and-trace system has been introduced to eliminate smuggling at petrol pumps and across the fuel supply chain.

According to a statement issued by Pakistan’s Petroleum Division, the Rahguzar mobile app has been launched to provide information on legal petrol pumps.

Consumers can now identify certified and approved fuel stations through the app.

A joint track-and-trace system developed by OGRA and PITB is also ready to monitor oil tankers.

Fuel tankers, terminals and retail outlets are being connected through an integrated system.

Automated tank gauges and digital nozzles will be installed at petrol pumps.

In 2025, offshore oil and gas blocks were auctioned for the first time in 18 years, with bids received for 23 blocks.
