Pakistani kitchen experts have started experimenting with mushroom dishes in their meals, as it is highly trending nowadays. White button mushrooms, once limited to a few continental dishes, are increasingly being used in Pakistani kitchens.
Home cooks and chefs are now making new and trendy dishes with mushrooms. China is the world’s largest producer and consumer of mushrooms, and after being inspired by the neighbouring country, Pakistan is also following the trend now.
From snacks to main dishes
In many households, mushrooms are now appearing in everyday appetisers. Stuffed mushroom caps filled with spiced potatoes are being served as a starter.

Mushroom pakoras have become a popular variation of a well-loved snack.

Some cooks are also preparing mushroom chaat, mixed sauteed mushrooms with tamarind sauce, chaat masala and fresh herbs.

For main meals, mushrooms are being adapted into traditional gravies. Mushroom korma, cooked in a creamy sauce, is often eaten with naan or rice.

Others are adding mushrooms to biryani, layering them with spiced rice and fried onions. Mushroom karahi, cooked with green chillies and tomatoes, is also gaining attention for its ability to absorb strong flavours.

Mushroom desserts
The white button mushrooms are shockingly also being used as an ingredient in desserts. Some home chefs have tried mushroom and walnut halwa. Others have experimented with mushroom-based chocolate truffles or even firni, adding a mild earthy taste to the traditional rice pudding.
Why are mushrooms becoming popular in Pakistan?
Food writers note that mushrooms blend easily with Pakistani spices and cooking methods. Their natural umami taste and firm texture make them a suitable alternative to meat in some dishes. At the same time, they are seen as a lighter option for those looking to change their diet.

Healthy diet
White button mushrooms are low in calories and contain nutrients such as vitamins, potassium and selenium. Adding them to regular meals can increase variety, as it is not a very heavy meal. Mushrooms are gradually becoming a part of Pakistani dining tables.
