PTA denies reports of tax cut on imported smartphones

PTA tax on smartphones

Hopes of a sharp drop in the price of PTA-approved iPhones in Pakistan have been dashed after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority dismissed reports claiming a major cut in mobile phone taxes.

In recent days, social media and several online platforms were flooded with claims that PTA approval charges had been reduced, raising expectations that high-end smartphones such as the iPhone 15 Pro Max could soon be available for as low as Rs170,000. The reports suggested that flagship imported phones would become significantly cheaper due to relaxed tax rules.

However, the PTA has made it clear that no such relief has been granted.

In an official statement issued on January 22, the authority warned the public about a fake notification circulating online that falsely claimed a reduction in mobile phone taxes. The PTA said it had not issued any directive, clarification, or instruction regarding changes to taxation for mobile phones.

“Fake Notification Alert. A fake notification is circulating on social media regarding an alleged reduction in mobile taxes and instructions for mobile phone importers and consumers. This information is entirely false and misleading,” the statement said.

The authority urged people to avoid sharing unverified information and advised consumers to rely only on PTA’s official website and verified social media channels for authentic updates.

What added to the confusion was the wording of the fabricated notice. It claimed that the supposed tax relief applied only to legal importers and registered vendors, while individual buyers would continue to pay the same PTA charges. The message also used firm and authoritative language, asking recipients to accept the clarification and stop raising questions, making it appear genuine.

PTA has rejected all such claims.

According to the regulator, mobile phone taxes remain unchanged for both importers and individual consumers, and all existing rules continue to apply under the current government policy. As a result, there is no immediate prospect of cheaper PTA-approved flagship smartphones in the country.
