A comprehensive plan is in the pipeline to declare Islamabad and Kathmandu as sister cities, and a draft agreement for granting this status is currently under preparation.
A proposal to declare Islamabad and Kathmandu as sister cities is currently under consideration, it was revealed during a meeting between Ambassador of Nepal, Rita Dhital and Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, held on Wednesday.
The issue of the plot allocated for the Nepali Embassy in the Diplomatic Enclave also came under discussion.
Chairman CDA Muhammad Ali Randhawa assured the Ambassador that the Authority is fully prepared to facilitate the Nepali Embassy in all related matters. He briefed her on the ongoing measures for the beautification and uplift of the Diplomatic Enclave, emphasising that its development remains among CDA’s top priorities.
Ambassador Rita Dhital praised the beauty and urban planning of Islamabad and lauded the CDA’s role in preserving the city’s natural environment and promoting sustainable urban development. She noted that the extensive green spaces and numerous parks contribute significantly to the peaceful and serene atmosphere of the federal capital.
It is worth mentioning here that a sister city, also known as a twin town, is a formal and enduring partnership between two communities in different countries. Established by local governments, these relationships are designed to encourage cultural, educational, and economic collaboration while strengthening international friendship and cooperation.
The concept emerged largely in the aftermath of World War II as a way to promote peace and mutual understanding across borders. The partnership is officially established through an agreement signed by the highest elected or appointed officials of both cities. At its core, the relationship aims to build goodwill, foster mutual understanding, and maintain lasting friendships between communities.
