Karachi to face four day water shortage: see affected areas

Water supply in many parts of Karachi will remain suspended or partially reduced for four days starting Monday because of urgent repair work on a major water pipeline, the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) said on Sunday.

According to the reports, a KWSC spokesperson said a leakage was found in the 84-inch Phase-I main water line in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 19.

The leak made it necessary to carry out immediate repair work, according to the reports.

The corporation said the repairs are being done to control leakages and improve the city’s water system, especially ahead of Ramazan.

Karachi water shortage

The repair work will start at 12 noon on Monday and will continue for 96 hours, according to media reports.

Special technical teams will stay at the site during the entire process to complete the work on time, officials said.

During the repair period, water supply from Dhabeji will be reduced. This will cause a shortage of about 200 million gallons per day.

Karachi normally receives around 650 million gallons of water daily, according to the reports.

During the repair work, the supply will drop to about 450 million gallons, according to the spokesperson.

KWSC said water supply from Hub, Gharo and other pumping stations will continue as usual and will not be affected.

Areas expected to be affected

Because of the reduced supply, several areas are likely to face water problems.

These include Clifton, DHA, Korangi, Malir, Landhi, Shah Faisal, Gulshan, Jinnah, Chanesar, Saddar and Lyari. The Landhi and Sherpao hydrants will also remain closed during the repair work.

The spokesperson said that after the repairs, the water transmission system is expected to improve. And those old leakage issues will be resolved.

Citizens were advised to use water carefully and avoid waste during this period.

However, media reports said that in the name of repair work, water supply to large parts of the city may remain badly affected. This has caused concern among residents about longer water shortages.
