Two-time T20 WC champions West Indies marching confidently ahead

T20 World Cup: England win toss, elect to bowl first against West Indies

West Indies strengthened their chances of qualifying for the Super Eights stage of the ICC T20 World Cup with a commanding 30-run victory over England in a crucial Group C encounter at the Wankhede Stadium.

Batting first, the West Indies posted an imposing total of 196 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Sheriff Radford led the charge with a blistering 76-run knock, anchoring the innings with aggressive stroke play.

Roston Chase contributed a steady 34, while Jason Holder provided late fireworks with a quickfire 33 to push the total close to the 200-run mark.

For England, Adil Rashid and Jamie Overton claimed two wickets each, while Jofra Archer and Sam Curran picked up one wicket apiece.

In response, England struggled to keep up with the required run rate and were bowled out for 166 on the final ball of the 19th over. Sam Curran fought valiantly with an unbeaten 43, while Jacob Bethell scored 33 and Phil Salt added 30. However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to build substantial partnerships, ultimately falling short of the target.

West Indies’ bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, with Godakesh Motie leading the attack with three wickets. Roston Chase chipped in with two, while Akeel Hussain, Romario Shepherd and Shamar Joseph took one wicket each to seal the victory.

The win significantly improves the West Indies’ position in Group C and clarifies their path to the Super Eights. England, meanwhile, face mounting pressure after narrowly escaping defeat against Nepal earlier in the tournament, where they secured a slim four-run victory.

Earlier, England captain Harry Brook won the toss and elected to bowl first against the West Indies in their T20 World Cup encounter in Mumbai as England look to build momentum after a nervy start to their campaign.

England made one change to their playing XI, with Jamie Overton coming in for Luke Wood. The West Indies also tweaked their lineup, bringing in Roston Chase in place of Matthew Forde.

The West Indies, meanwhile, enter the clash brimming with confidence after registering a commanding 35-run win in their previous match. With both teams aiming to strengthen their position in the tournament, an intense battle is expected at the Mumbai venue.
