Big update in electricity prices for Ramzan 2026

Ramzan 2026 electricity prices

Consumers in Pakistan could be compelled to pay more for electricity in the coming Ramzan 2026 following a request from the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) for an increase in the monthly fuel adjustment charges.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) will consider the proposal during a hearing to be held on February 26th.

Proposed Increase

CPPA has made a request to NEPRA for increase of Rs1.78 per unit of the monthly fuel adjustment component.

The move comes after the rising generation costs in January which were higher than the previously approved reference rates.

January Electricity Generation

As per CPPA, a total of 914 million units of electricity were generated during the month of January out of which 876.2 million units were supplied to the distribution companies.

The reference cost of Rs10.39 per unit was adopted and the cost incurred was Rs12.17 per unit.

Energy Mix and Cost Drivers

Electricity was produced from a variety of sources in January:

  • Hydropower: 7.8%
  • Local coal: 15.36%
  • Imported coal: 17.28%
  • Expensive furnace oil: 3%
  • Local gas: 12.23%
  • Imported LNG: 21.9%
  • Nuclear fuel: 17.49%

High dependence on imported fuel and LNG were some of the factors that contributed to this additional expense in the generation cost and this was the reason behind CPPA’s request for an upward revision.

Next Steps

NEPRA will decide whether to approve increase or not at the February 26 hearing.

If approved, it may imply a noticeable increase in electricity bills for consumers which will add to the financial pressure on households during the holy month of Ramzan.

Power to Stay On at the Time of Sehr and Iftar

In other news Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division), Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, has ordered the authorities to make sure that Sehr and Iftar in Ramzan 2026 will have uninterrupted electricity.

The Power Division has issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all the electricity distribution companies including K-Electric.
