Islamabad Expressway to get major traffic relief project

Islamabad Expressway

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated a major infrastructure project to relieve the congestion of the much-travelled Islamabad Expressway.

In view of rising pressure on one of the busiest corridors of the capital city, authority has begun work on the construction and rejuvenation of a 9-kilometre length of service road from Faizabad Interchange to Gulberg Greens.

The new service road is expected to form an alternative road to hundreds and thousands of daily commuters who are stuck with the long delays during peak hours.

By taking local traffic off the main carriageway, officials believe that the project will dramatically increase overall traffic flow, also cutting travel time for motorists using the expressway.

According to officials, the proposed service road will go through several densely populated and fast-growing areas.

These include, Soan, Pindorian, Shakrial, Garden Town, Khanna, Kangal, Ghouri Town and Koral.

Residents of these localities often depend upon the Islamabad Expressway for commuting and their routines contribute to the high degree congestion on the main highway.

The first and foremost purpose of the project is the division of the local and short distance traffic from the fast-moving, long-distance vehicles.

This separation is expected to increase safety of the road, ensure free movement, and reduce bottlenecks that usually occur at the entrances and exits along the expressway.

CDA authorities have also made plans for the second phase of the project. After extending the initial stretch from Faizabad to Gulberg Greens and Koral, the service road will be extended from Koral to Rawat.

This expansion will open up an alternate corridor parallel to the expressway as it is built in a continuous expansion.

Officials believe this initiative to be part of CDA’s vast initiative to modernise Islamabad’s road infrastructure.

With residential and commercial developments taking-off at a rapid rate along the Islamabad expressway, it has become essential to provide improved connectivity and also implement better traffic management for the city’s increasing population.
