An Iranian drone has targeted Azerbaijan’s autonomous Nakhchivan exclave, opening another front in the ongoing conflict launched by Israel and the United States. Both countries attacked Iran when the dialogue between Iran and the US was underway.
Azerbaijan’s foreign minister confirmed that Iran targeted its airport on 12 at noon on Thursday.
“One drone struck the terminal building of the airport in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, while another drone fell near a school building in the village of Shakarabad,” the ministry said.
“We strongly condemn these drone attacks launched from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran.”
Azerbaijan’s foreign minister also confirmed the death of two civilians and property damage at the airport.
At the same time, Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry demanded an explanation from Iran and said that Azerbaijan have the right to respond to this aggression.
Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry summoned Iranian Ambassador Mojtaba Demirchilou over the attack on the airport.
Nakhchivan borders Iran and Turkiye and became part of a historic US-brokered peace deal that Armenia and Azerbaijan signed last year after years of deadly conflict. Under the agreement, the two countries approved a land corridor called the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP).
The route gives the United States development rights to build a corridor linking Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave and creating a passage between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Why Iran attack Azerbaijan?
Several journalists are giving their opinions on the recent attack by Iran on Azerbaijan. However, a prominent journalist from an international media outlet said that Iran accused Azerbaijan several times of spying for the US.
The journalist said that Targeting Azerbaijan is a clear message from Iran.
Iran earlier targeted Gulf countries, including the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman. After the Gulf, Iran targeted Azerbaijan today.
