The United States (US) Embassy in Islamabad has announced that its Consular Section will remain closed for routine services on Friday, March 6, 2026, because of possible protests across Pakistan.
In a security advisory, the embassy said the temporary closure is a precautionary measure as authorities monitor the situation. Routine consular services, including visa appointments, will not be available during the closure.
However, the embassy said emergency consular assistance will still be provided if required.
Movement of US personnel restricted
The advisory also stated that the movement of US personnel in Pakistan has been restricted as a precaution.
Embassy officials said the decision was taken due to concerns that public demonstrations could take place in different cities.
US citizens living in or visiting Pakistan were advised to remain alert and stay updated through local news reports.
They were also encouraged to avoid areas where large public gatherings may occur, keep a low profile, and remain aware of their surroundings.
The embassy recommended that Americans carry proper identification and cooperate with local authorities if required.
Embassy issues safety advice for US citizens
The mission further advised US nationals to review their personal security plans and ensure that their details are updated with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
Registration with the program allows citizens to receive security alerts and updates from the embassy during emergencies.
Officials also urged citizens to continue monitoring emails and official channels for updates about consular appointments and embassy operations.
Rising regional tensions
The advisory comes at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent military exchanges involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
The conflict escalated after coordinated strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets.
Iran later responded with retaliatory attacks against several locations in the region, raising fears of a wider confrontation.
The situation has also led to protests and demonstrations in different parts of the world, including some countries in South Asia.
Statements from Washington and Tehran
US President Donald Trump recently issued strong statements warning Iran against further escalation, saying Washington would respond firmly to any threat against US interests in the region.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, also addressed the situation, saying the country would defend itself against what he described as aggression by foreign powers.
While both sides continue to exchange warnings, analysts say the situation remains fluid and could influence security conditions across the wider region.
The US Embassy in Islamabad said it will continue to monitor developments closely.
Officials added that updates regarding embassy services and security advisories will be shared through official channels as the situation evolves.
For now, US citizens in Pakistan have been advised to remain cautious and stay informed through the official websites of the US government.
