NPC Islamabad election results announced

Islamabad witnessed a significant political shift in the National Press Club (NPC) election as Abdul Razak Sial of the United Opposition Democrats Panel was elected President with 1,067 votes, narrowly defeating Nayyar Ali of the incumbent Journalist Panel, who secured 1,052 votes.

The Democrats Panel also claimed the positions of Secretary and two Vice Presidents, consolidating their control over the club’s leadership.

Despite the setback for the Journalist Panel, its members secured victories in key posts. Abid Abbasi defeated Khawar Nawaz Raja for the position of Secretary Finance, while Shakeela Jalil won as Joint Secretary, and Sehrish Qureshi also secured a top position, demonstrating that the panel still maintains a significant presence in the club’s executive body.

The closely contested election reflects the evolving dynamics within the National Press Club, signalling both a change in leadership and continued competition among journalists in Islamabad.

The results of the National Press Club (NPC) election in Islamabad have been announced, with Ehtesham-ul-Haq of the Journalists Panel emerging victorious for the position of Vice President. He secured 1,202 votes in a closely contested race among several candidates from different panels.

The elections witnessed strong competition, reflecting the active participation of the journalist community in choosing their representatives.

Candidates from the Democratic Panel also achieved success in the Vice President race, with Bashir Chaudhry receiving 1,076 votes and Usman Khan securing 1,015 votes.

Other notable contenders included Asad Toor with 974 votes, Shah Muhammad with 865 votes, and Khizr Malik, who garnered 807 votes.

Analysts describe Ehtesham-ul-Haq’s win as a significant development for the Journalists Panel, which faced stiff competition from other strong candidates.

Meanwhile Democratic Alliance emerged victorious over the Journalists Panel for the Secretary position. Dr Furqan Rao of the Democratic Alliance secured 1,025 votes, narrowly defeating the Journalists Panel’s Khalid Mahmood, who received 998 votes, a margin of just 27 votes.

The National Press Club holds a crucial position within the journalistic community, advocating for press freedom, professional rights and the welfare of journalists nationwide. The newly elected representatives are expected to prioritise resolving professional issues, safeguarding journalists’ rights, and promoting initiatives for the betterment of the media community.

The elections, marked by high voter turnout, highlight the engagement and enthusiasm of journalists in shaping the leadership of their representative body.
