WhatsApp is developing a feature named ‘automatic message translation’, which can translate messages in almost 21 languages.

The update is still in development and is expected to be tested by beta users before a wider release.

From manual to automatic translation

At present, users can translate messages by selecting them and tapping a “Translate” option.

The new feature is designed to remove this extra step.

Once enabled, messages in selected languages will be translated automatically within chats, while the original text will still be available to view.

Settings and language options

Users will be able to turn on the feature through chat settings.

They can choose both the source language and the language they want messages to be translated into.

The feature will work in both individual and group chats.

However, in group conversations, automatic translation may only function properly if all participants are using the same language.

Focus on privacy and offline use

According to details, translations will be processed directly on the user’s device using system-level tools.

This means messages will not be sent to external servers, helping maintain end-to-end encryption.

Users will need to download language packs to enable offline and real-time translations.

The feature’s availability may depend on the device and operating system.

Older versions of iOS and Android may not support all language packs.

More languages and improvements are expected to be added in future updates, as the feature moves closer to a full release.
