Zara Larsson is standing up for herself after appearing to criticise Taylor Swift and her fanbase.
The artist sparked backlash following her interview with The Guardian published on April 3, where she explained her refusal to release a single prior to the deluxe edition of her album Midnight Sun stating that “playing the chart game is so dead.”
“No one’s paying attention to the charts except for industry professionals and perhaps Taylor Swift fans,” she remarked.
Shortly thereafter, the Swedish pop star took to her Instagram Stories to clarify her remarks, saying that they came from a place of admiration and even envy towards Taylor Swift.
“I did an interview in The Guardian ‘saying no one cares about the charts but industry people and maybe Taylor Swift fans’ because no one plays the chart game like Taylor Swift lol, she’s literally the best at it and everyone knows that. It’s not the interpretation you all think it is,” Zara Larsson wrote, acknowledging that she does, in fact, care about charts.
“I mentioned that because I feel like I currently hold some cultural significance in pop music, something I’ve never experienced to this extent, but I’m also not in a position to impact the charts,” Zara Larsson elaborated.
“And I still believe that one can be an exceptional artist without charting. Those two aspects are not mutually exclusive to me, and they shouldn’t be for any fans either”, she added.
