A recent benchmark has examined the gaming performance of several popular games on both Windows 11 and CachyOS, a Linux distribution focused on performance.
While both operating systems performed admirably and were closely matched overall, Cyberpunk 2077 and Space Marine 2 experienced notable performance enhancements on CachyOS that gamers should be aware of.
Linux achieves higher FPS than Windows 11 in tests
According to reports, NJ Tech conducted the benchmark on YouTube, comparing Windows 11 with CachyOS on the same computer.
The system specifications included an AMD Ryzen 5 5600X processor and a Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card.
NJ Tech later shared both the average frame rate and the average of the lowest 1% of frame rates for each operating system.
In the majority of the tests, CachyOS emerged victorious, achieving approximately 3-10% higher FPS than Windows 11.
Additionally, there were several clear victories for CachyOS. For instance, Space Marine 2 operated significantly smoother on the Linux distribution, averaging 81fps compared to Windows 11’s 68 FPS.
CachyOS maintained a consistent performance, with a 1% low of 72 FPS, in contrast to Windows 11’s 58fps. Cyberpunk 2077 also showcased a strong performance for CachyOS, with an average of 98fps and a 1% low of 76 FPS.
Linux performance produces fewer disruptions
In comparison, Windows 11 recorded an average of 91 fps and a low of 63 fps, establishing CachyOS as the clear victor in rendering this graphically demanding game.
Initial findings indicated a consistent performance edge for CachyOS.
In Crimson Desert, the Linux configuration averaged 63 FPS, while Windows managed 59 FPS.
The difference widened in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, where Windows achieved 68 FPS, whereas CachyOS delivered 81 FPS.
The Linux system also demonstrated superior 1% low results in both games, suggesting fewer performance fluctuations.
Nevertheless, not all games were favorable for CachyOS. Windows 11 managed to equal CachyOS in average FPS in The Division 2, and surpassed it by 4 percentage points in the 1% lows. Windows 11 secured a more definitive victory in The First Descendant, posting an average of 63 FPS and a 1% low of 39 FPS.
