Sindh police to set up aerial surveillance unit with drones

Authorities in Sindh have made the decision to create a special aerial surveillance unit for the police using drones and advanced technology to improve monitoring and crime prevention throughout the region, as stated by officials on Saturday.

The proposed “Aerial Surveillance Division” is expected to help ongoing monitoring of urban areas, highways, railway lines, and riverine regions, which are often challenging to patrol using traditional methods.

This decision was reached during a high-level meeting led by Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police, Javed Alam Odho, at the Central Police Office in Karachi, where senior officials assessed current capabilities and future needs.

“Aerial and digital surveillance is an important requirement and represents the future of modern policing,” Odho stated during the meeting.

The statement further indicated that a committee of senior officers would be established to finalise the division’s structure, standard operating procedures, and operational framework.

At the same time, the committee is expected to also evaluate procurement and training requirements.

The IT wing of Sindh police provided a briefing during the meeting on the application of drones and other modern technologies, highlighting their potential to enhance surveillance, response times, and coordination.

“With the aid of modern technology and aerial surveillance systems, policing and monitoring will not only become simpler but also more effective and dependable,” Odho stated.

The statement emphasised that aerial and digital surveillance would additionally improve traffic management, crowd control, and the oversight of public gatherings.
