PTA issues IoT licenses to 23 companies boosting Pakistan's digital connectivity

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has granted Internet of Things (IoT) licenses to 23 companies, representing a crucial advancement in Pakistan’s digital transformation and the enhancement of next-generation connectivity infrastructure.

The regulator has launched Low Power Wide Area Network licensing specifically for IoT applications, thereby creating new opportunities for cutting-edge technologies across various sectors.

The licensing framework encompasses a 10-year district-level internet services license, which requires an initial fee of Rs. 300,000 and an annual fee of Rs. 100,000.

LPWAN licenses necessitate compliance with specified frequency bands, such as 865 to 868 MHz, in addition to strict adherence to regulations concerning data management, privacy, and security.

This initiative has garnered increasing interest from both local and international stakeholders in Pakistan’s expanding digital ecosystem.

The licensing framework accommodates a wide array of use cases, including smart cities, industrial automation, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, smart logistics, and energy management.

The PTA aims to provide secure, scalable, and interference-free connectivity through the regulated allocation of IoT spectrum.

This organised approach will assist in positioning Pakistan as an innovation-driven participant in the global digital economy.

The PTA commenced accepting applications for IoT licenses in May 2022, establishing a formal procedure to enhance IoT infrastructure throughout the country.

Under the Class Licensing regime, companies can submit applications via the PTA online portal, in accordance with the IoT LPWAN License framework, which outlines technical requirements, authorised frequency bands, and operational guidelines for service providers.

The PTA has previously performed field surveys and inspections of licensed operators. These evaluations have led to targeted proposals aimed at enhancing efficiency and ensuring the sustainable deployment of IoT networks.
