An important development has emerged regarding the future of the free public transport facility in Punjab, with a decision on whether to extend or end the service expected soon.
According to sources, the free public transport service in Punjab is likely to be extended for one more month while the final decision will be made by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz.
Sources further stated that the Chief Minister has called a meeting on Monday to make the final decision. The Transport Department has already submitted recommendations for a one-month extension and completed the necessary groundwork.
Under the proposal free travel would continue for another month on the Orange Line Metro Train and Metro Bus Service. Similarly, free travel would also remain available for one more month on Speedo buses and electric buses.
Sources added that the facility was initially introduced to provide relief to citizens following the recent increase in petroleum prices, benefiting hundreds of thousands of commuters daily. Approximately 290,000 passengers use the Orange Line Train each day, while more than 100,000 people travel via Metro Bus for free. Overall, nearly 800,000 citizens across Punjab benefit from this service daily.
The Transport Department has also recommended that the free travel facility be gradually phased out once petroleum prices return to normal levels.
The final decision will be taken in a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister, after which an official announcement is expected.
Earlier, CM Maryam Nawaz announced that public transport in Punjab would be completely free for a period of one month.
The purpose of this is to give relief to the people of Punjab. So, they can travel without being burdened by high oil prices.
CM Maryam Nawaz also announced Rs100 subsidy on diesel to farmers.
The citizens will not need to buy tickets when they are riding on the Orange Line Train, Metro Bus Service, Speedo Bus and Green Electric Bus.
