The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert across the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) amid growing concerns over glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs).
According to the PDMA official, rising temperatures combined with expected rainfall have significantly increased the risk of glacial lake bursts and subsequent flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
The authority has forecast rain and thunderstorms on May 3, along with the arrival of a new wave of westerly winds in the upper regions. Heavy rainfall is expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan, raising the likelihood of weather-related hazards.
The PDMA stated that rain and storms are expected on May 3, while a new wave of westerly winds is likely to enter the upper areas. As a result, heavy rainfall is forecast in Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan.
The alert further mentions that glacial lake outbursts could trigger sudden flooding (flash floods), posing a serious threat to low-lying areas. There are also concerns that vehicles could be swept away due to strong currents in rivers and canals.
The PDMA has instructed district administrations to take emergency measures, ensure preparedness in advance, and increase monitoring in vulnerable areas. Rescue personnel and relevant agencies have also been directed to ensure the availability of necessary machinery.
The statement adds that early warning systems should remain active to enable an immediate response in the event of an emergency. The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel and postpone visits to high-risk areas.
